According the Centers for Disease Control, autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are a group of developmental disabilities characterized by significant impairments in social interaction and communication, by the presence of unusual speech, behaviors, and interests, by unusual ways of learning and paying attention, and by reacting to different sensations and environmental stimuli. The cognitive abilities of individuals with ASDs can vary from mild to severe. According to the U.S. Department of Education and other governmental agencies, autism and autism spectrum disorders affect 1 of every 166 children. At a growing rate of 10-17 percent per year, the Autism Society of America estimates that autism could affect 4 million Americans and their families in the next decade.
